04

Quarterly Strategy

Engagement-specific cadence — daily during fraud discovery, weekly during litigation prep, monthly retainer during long-running matters. Always scoped upfront.

When we suspected our office manager of embezzlement, Milestone reconstructed three years of transactions in two weeks. They documented $186K in unauthorized transfers with a clean paper trail. The DA used their report verbatim — and our insurance carrier paid out without challenging a single line.

Questions We Get a Lot

Before we talk.

When should I engage a forensic accountant?+

Early — almost always earlier than feels comfortable. The longer fraud or financial irregularities run, the harder they become to document. If you have a suspicion, a 30-minute scoping call costs nothing and tells you whether a real engagement is warranted.

Are your reports admissible in court?+

Yes — when the engagement is scoped as litigation support, reports are prepared to evidentiary standards. Our CPAs are credentialed expert witnesses and have testified in California courts. For internal investigations, reports are less formal but still file-ready.

Will the subject of the investigation know?+

Not from us. Forensic engagements are confidential by default. We work directly with you (or your attorney) and disclose nothing to other parties. Standard NDAs cover both directions.

How does this work alongside my attorney?+

We work under attorney direction frequently — attorney-client privilege extends to our work product in many cases, which protects strategic memos and preliminary findings. About 60% of our forensic engagements are attorney-retained.

What does a forensic engagement actually cost?+

Most engagements run $15–60K depending on document volume and complexity. Fraud investigations of established length and litigation-support engagements can run higher. Always scoped before work begins.

Can you also do partnership valuation for a buyout?+

Yes — we run business valuations for buy-sell triggers, divorce proceedings, and partner-departure scenarios. Independent valuations are court-defensible and often required by partnership agreements.
